I have know and photograph this family for years. So lovely to see them each time. Time clearly does not stand still when I look at how fast these kids are growing.
This time around, eldest daughter Lesedi, was celebrating her birthday. It is the perfect occasion for family photos.

An excellent portfolio and Z-card is extremely important. It is your introduction to prospective clients. It shows them everything they need to consider you for the job.

This is a new theme that I tried for the studio photo sessions over the weekend. My own daughter played “model” for me to try it out. I love what we came up with. Hope you agree.
Pastel schemes is a bit of a trend right now and I fell hook, line and sinker for it. We are hoping to shoot lots of lovely family photo sessions and models with this theme.
So you would like to be a model? Step one is to find an agency to represent you. The agency will ask you for your portfolio to view. You must make a great first impression on agencies and clients with your portfolio. Your portfolio is your introduction – your resume.
This portfolio must show your versatility and ability to express yourself. Do not focus on quantity but rather go for ten excellent shots that will blow the minds of those viewing your book. Remember to update your book regularly with your latest work.
Learn and practice modelling poses. This seems easy right? You simply scroll through Instagram and fashion magazines and copy what those models do? No! It is more complicated than that. If you are unsure about yourself please take the time find an accomplished coach and learn the skills of the trade.
Models must translate a three-dimensional object, their bodies, into the two-dimensional space of a flat image. This comes through practice. I would suggest that you read this article.
Your portfolio should include the following:
BEAUTY SHOT
This is a clean headshot, in colour, showing the model’s face. No heavy make-up or over styled hair. No jewellery. This is your first image in your portfolio and shows the natural you.
FULL LENGHT BODY SHOT
Showing the model’s body type. Form fitting clothes. The best option here is jeans and t-shirt
SWIMSUIT SHOT/CHEST SHOT
This is your choice. If you are not comfortable or aiming for this market – leave this one. Remember to keep this shot tasteful. Men don’t buy swimwear for women – women do. No need to be excessively sexy in this shot. The same apply to male models.
FASHION SHOTS – COMMERCIAL WORK
Creative shots that you can add to the middle of your book.
SMILING IMAGE
In most of your headshots you will not be smiling – but agents and clients MUST see your smile and teeth. Perfect teeth is not a must, but the client knows what they need for a specific shoot.
THE “IT” SHOT AT THE END
Always end your portfolio on a strong closing shot. Leave them wanting more.

I just love this family. Every time they come around to the studio we have so much fun. And this time was extra special with a new addition – Baby James!
